UK Prime Minister Cancels Engagements Following Father’s Death
A Downing Street spokesperson confirmed that the prime minister would step away from scheduled activities for Monday and Tuesday following his father’s passing.
Roy Burnham had reportedly been living in a care facility after developing Alzheimer’s disease. The prime minister had previously spoken publicly about his father’s condition and the fact that he was unaware of his son’s rise to the country’s highest political office.
Reflecting on his father’s inability to know that he had become prime minister in July, Burnham told The Times of London over the summer: "That’s a sadness because he would be (proud). The way I look at it, it’s his achievement as well. A whole family achievement although he doesn’t know it."
Alzheimer’s disease is a progressive neurological condition and one of the most common forms of dementia. It gradually affects memory, thinking and other cognitive abilities, eventually making everyday tasks increasingly difficult.
Although there is currently no cure for Alzheimer’s disease, medical researchers continue to study treatments and approaches aimed at slowing its progression and managing its symptoms.
