Swiss Government Partially Blocks US Military Flights Linked to Iran War
According to a statement issued by the Swiss Federal Council, two reconnaissance missions planned for March 15 were not permitted. Officials explained that the decision was based on Switzerland’s neutrality regulations, which bar the use of its airspace for military operations tied to active conflicts.
However, authorities allowed other flights that were considered unrelated to combat operations.
These included a maintenance flight scheduled for March 17, along with two transport aircraft overflights planned for March 15.
The Swiss Federal Council indicated that future requests not connected to the war would generally receive approval. This includes flights for humanitarian assistance or medical purposes. At the same time, applications involving activities beyond normal operations, or cases where the purpose of the flight cannot be clearly established, would be rejected.
Tensions in the region have escalated sharply since coordinated military strikes by the United States and Israel targeted locations inside Iran on Feb. 28, according to reports. Iranian authorities say the attacks have resulted in at least 1,300 deaths, including the country’s then-supreme leader Ali Khamenei.
In response, Tehran has carried out retaliatory operations involving drones and missiles directed at Israel and several other countries in the region, including Jordan and Iraq, as well as Gulf states hosting American military installations. The exchanges have caused casualties, damaged infrastructure, and disrupted global markets and air travel, according to reports.
