WHO Warns Middle East Conflict Strains Regional Health Services

(MENAFN) The ongoing hostilities in the Middle East are increasingly straining medical services throughout the region, the head of the World Health Organization has cautioned, following a fatal incident involving emergency responders in southern Lebanon.

“The expansion of the conflict in the Middle East is increasingly impacting health services throughout the region,” said Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus in a statement on Tuesday.

He expressed sorrow over events in Tyre, where three paramedics lost their lives and six others were injured while trying to assist people wounded in explosions.

The WHO chief highlighted the growing dangers faced by medical personnel in conflict zones, stating, “The risk that more health workers will count among the casualties is high. This must be avoided at all costs.” He emphasized the critical need for doctors, nurses, and paramedics to carry out life-saving work without interference, especially during crises.

Tedros also called on all sides involved in fighting to uphold international humanitarian law and ensure the safety of healthcare staff, facilities, and patients. “Warring parties must abide by international humanitarian law and protect health workers, facilities and patients,” he said.

Urging calm as regional tensions rise, he added, “I call for the utmost restraint and for voices of wisdom and peace to rise above the sound of bombings.”

The warning comes amid a sharp escalation following large-scale attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran last Saturday, which have reportedly killed nearly 800 people, including Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei and senior military officials.
