U.S. Media Outlet Backtracks on Iran Kurdish Offensive Story
A correspondent had initially published the claim on X, citing a US official as his source. He subsequently deleted the post and issued a retraction, acknowledging uncertainty surrounding the situation on the ground.
"There are conflicting reports regarding what is currently happening in northwestern Iran near the border with Iraq. It is unclear whether a ground offensive by the Iranian-Kurdish militias has already begun or may be launched in the coming hours. A senior official in one of the Iranian-Kurdish factions denied to me that a ground offensive has started," Ravid later wrote.
The groups at the center of the disputed report are small Iranian opposition factions operating out of the Kurdish Regional Government (KRG) administered territory in Iraq.
Iranian state media swiftly rejected any suggestion that Iraq-based Kurdish opposition fighters had crossed into Iranian territory. Iranian media — widely regarded as a media outlet with close ties to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) — reported, citing security officials, that no armed elements had entered Iranian territory from the KRG zone.
Israeli media, meanwhile, reported that armed factions — among them PJAK, a group affiliated with the designated terrorist organization PKK — had initiated military operations against Iranian forces along the Iran-Iraq border.
At the diplomatic level, Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi held a phone conversation with Bafel Talabani, leader of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) in Iraq, according to Iran's Foreign Ministry. The two discussed what Tehran described as "terrorist activity" along the shared border and the urgency of deepening bilateral security cooperation.
