US, China Set for New High-Level Trade Talks in Paris

(MENAFN) The United States and China are preparing to convene another round of senior-level trade discussions in Paris next week, just days before US President Donald Trump is expected to travel to Beijing.

According to reports, the American delegation will be headed by Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, while China’s team will be led by Vice Premier He Lifeng. The agenda is expected to cover a range of economic matters, including tariffs, cross-border investment, soybean trade, and rare earth supplies.

The White House has announced that Trump plans to visit China from March 31 to April 2, marking his first trip to the country since resuming office in January 2025. Chinese officials, however, have not formally confirmed the itinerary, stating only that both governments “have maintained communication at all levels.”

The anticipated Paris meeting — though its exact timing and location could still be adjusted — would represent the sixth round of trade negotiations between the two powers since Trump initiated a tariff dispute in April of last year.

Previous sessions have taken place in Geneva, London, Stockholm, Madrid, and Kuala Lumpur.

Those talks ultimately resulted in a substantial reduction in reciprocal tariffs, which had at one point climbed into triple-digit levels.

Last year, Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping also held their first in-person meeting in South Korea, signaling efforts by both sides to stabilize relations amid ongoing economic tensions.
