Data from the German automobile club ADAC showed the national average price of diesel hitting €2.054 per liter on Wednesday, while gasoline (E10) climbed to an average of €1.995 per liter in morning trading.
The spike marks a sharp departure from late February levels — diesel has surged by €0.31 and gasoline by €0.18 compared to Feb. 27 prices, a dramatic acceleration that has eclipsed the routine 10-euro-cent morning-to-evening price fluctuation typical of German fuel markets.
The Strait of Hormuz — through which roughly one-fifth of global oil trade flows daily — sits at the epicenter of the price pressure, with fears of prolonged supply disruption sending shockwaves through energy markets. Market observers note the escalating Middle Eastern conflict has already triggered partial disruptions to diesel supply chains.
Crude oil price swings and US dollar fluctuations remain the dominant structural forces behind retail fuel pricing, analysts note, though the current geopolitical premium has sharply amplified both variables.
ADAC cautioned consumers that fuel prices can vary considerably between stations and urged drivers to compare prices carefully — advice carrying added weight during the current period of acute market volatility.
