UN expresses worry of Israel assaulting UN peacekeepers force
(MENAFN) The United Nations expressed deep concern Monday over recent Israeli attacks targeting a UN peacekeeping patrol in southern Lebanon.
UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said that on Sunday, an Israeli drone dropped a grenade near a UNIFIL (United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon) patrol, followed by tank fire in Kafr Kila within the UNIFIL area of operations. Fortunately, no peacekeepers were injured, and no damage was reported.
Dujarric noted that this incident followed an earlier one at the same location, in which an Israeli drone aggressively flew over a UNIFIL patrol, prompting peacekeepers to employ defensive countermeasures to neutralize the threat. “Any actions that may endanger the safety and security of the peacekeepers are completely unacceptable and must cease immediately,” he stressed.
UNIFIL, which has been stationed in southern Lebanon since 1978 and was reinforced under UN Security Council Resolution 1701 after the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war, confirmed the events on Sunday. Israel has repeatedly conducted airstrikes in Lebanon, claiming to target Hezbollah infrastructure despite the ceasefire agreement that took effect in November 2024.
