First world wind-powered underwater data center gets build in China

(MENAFN) China has completed construction of the world’s first wind-powered underwater data center (UDC) in Shanghai’s Lin-gang Special Area, as of Tuesday.

The facility, located within the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone, has a total power capacity of 24 megawatts and represents an investment of 1.6 billion yuan (around $226 million), according to local authorities.

Unlike conventional land-based data centers, this underwater facility runs on over 95% renewable electricity, cutting energy usage by 22.8% while eliminating water consumption entirely and reducing land usage by more than 90%.

Officials described the project as a major step forward in integrating UDC technology with offshore renewable energy, demonstrating a model for low-carbon computing infrastructure and showcasing the potential for utilizing offshore wind power locally.
