Russia Calls Pre-Summit Talks with US ‘Constructive’
The two leaders discussed the possibility of a face-to-face meeting during a Thursday phone call, agreeing that high-level delegations would begin preparations immediately. Trump called the conversation “very productive” and said a meeting could take place within two weeks.
This would follow their last meeting in Alaska on Aug. 15, the first between sitting Russian and US presidents since the start of the more than three-and-a-half-year Ukraine war.
Lavrov and Rubio focused on “possible concrete steps to implement the understandings reached” in the recent phone call, though details were not released. A US State Department spokesperson emphasized that the talks aimed to advance a “durable resolution of the Russia-Ukraine war” in line with Trump’s vision.
