Greta Thunberg Set to Be Deported to Greece, Media Reports

(MENAFN) Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg is set to be deported to Greece on Monday following her detention aboard the Global Sumud Flotilla, which was en route to the Gaza Strip in an effort to challenge Israel’s blockade, an Israeli channel reported Sunday.

The report confirmed that Thunberg will be flown to Greece alongside Greek nationals also held by Israeli authorities after taking part in the flotilla. A total of 165 activists are expected to be deported on the same flight.

Thunberg was among more than 400 activists, lawmakers, and lawyers detained when Israeli forces intercepted the Gaza-bound aid flotilla on Wednesday. While some detainees have already been released, legal action remains ongoing for others.

Documents reviewed by media reveal that Thunberg informed Swedish officials she was confined in a cell infested with bedbugs and given inadequate food and water during her detention.

The British newspaper also quoted a fellow detainee who claimed Israeli forces compelled Thunberg to pose with flags for photographs.

Multiple flotilla participants echoed allegations of harsh treatment. Turkish activist Ersin Celik told a Turkish news outlet that Israeli forces “severely tortured Greta before our eyes” and “made her crawl and made her kiss the Israeli flag.”

Italian journalist Lorenzo D’Agostino added that she was “wrapped in the Israeli flag and paraded like a trophy.”
