France’s PM Lecornu Announces Resignation

(MENAFN) On Monday, French Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu handed in his resignation to President Emmanuel Macron, following a surge of criticism targeting his freshly revealed Cabinet lineup. According to media, citing sources at the Elysee Palace, Macron promptly accepted Lecornu's decision.

The resignation surfaced moments after Lecornu introduced a new government, one that largely recycled familiar faces from the administration that crumbled on September 8. This fresh Cabinet was met with immediate disapproval from opposition factions.

Marine Le Pen, leader of the far-right National Rally, slammed the decision on the platform X, operated by the US social media giant, calling it “pathetic” to retain a government “seasoned with the man who bankrupted France.”

Echoing this dissatisfaction, Green Party leader Marine Tondelier accused the Macron camp of elevating their “contempt for democracy” to unprecedented levels and singled out Bruno Le Maire’s return to the Cabinet for particular reproach.

Socialist leader Boris Vallaud weighed in, stating that the Macronists’ “obstination plunges the country a little deeper into chaos every day.”

In a parallel development, Interior Minister Bruno Retailleau revealed plans to convene a strategic committee for the Republicans later Monday, citing the “political situation created” by the recent government reshuffle. On X, he remarked, “The composition of the Government does not reflect the promised break.”

Within Lecornu’s reshuffled Cabinet, Roland Lescure—formerly the industry minister and an ally of Macron—assumed the role of finance minister, succeeding Eric Lombard. Meanwhile, Bruno Le Maire returned to the fold, taking over the Defense Ministry, which Lecornu previously led.

Other notable appointments included Eric Woerth overseeing territorial organization and decentralization, Naima Moutchou managing transformation and public action alongside artificial intelligence and digital technology, Mathieu Lefevre as minister of relations with parliament, and Marina Ferrari heading sports, youth, and community life.

The political landscape now awaits the ramifications of these moves as France grapples with an unsettled government structure and mounting public discontent.
