Poland’s leader calls for reparations from Germany in WWII anniversary commemorations
Speaking at a ceremony on the Westerplatte peninsula in northern Poland, where German battleship shelling 86 years ago triggered the war in Europe, Nawrocki said, “In order to build a partnership based on truth and good relations, we must address reparations from the German state, which I unequivocally demand as Polish president, for the common good.”
He emphasized that reparations are not a substitute for historical memory, stating: “Poland, as a frontline state and a key country on NATO’s eastern flank, requires justice, truth, and transparent relations with Germany, but we also need reparations from the German state.”
