US Homeland Security Secretary unveils plan of ICE locating in major cities
(MENAFN) US Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem confirmed on Sunday that the federal government plans to expand Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations in several major cities.
Noem told a news agency that ICE already conducts operations in Chicago, throughout Illinois, and other states, ensuring federal laws are enforced, but additional resources will be deployed to strengthen these efforts. She cited rising urban crime as a motivating factor.
“There are many cities grappling with crime and violence, and we haven’t ruled out any measures,” she said. Noem encouraged large cities such as San Francisco, Boston, and Chicago to collaborate with federal authorities to improve safety and public freedom, similar to what residents experience in Washington, D.C.
When asked about specifics for Chicago, including potential National Guard involvement in immigration operations, Noem said decisions of that nature fall under the president’s authority and declined to comment on operational details.
Her remarks followed Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson’s executive order outlining the city’s response to federal enforcement plans. The order prohibits local police from assisting federal immigration agents and directs city agencies to use legal channels to prevent federal actions that could infringe residents’ rights. It also requires federal personnel in Chicago to operate transparently, displaying names and badge numbers and forgoing masks.
Johnson criticized militarized enforcement scenarios, warning they could involve armed vehicles and active-duty soldiers on city streets, despite no requests for such measures.
