Pakistan's Supreme Court Approves Bail for Ex-Premier

(MENAFN) Pakistan’s highest judicial authority granted bail on Thursday to the country’s former Prime Minister, Imran Khan, in several legal matters associated with the violent assaults on military establishments that occurred in May 2023.

According to court documentation and his attorney, Khan, who is currently imprisoned, received relief in numerous charges tied to those events.

The Supreme Court’s three-judge panel, chaired by Chief Justice Yahya Afridi, accepted Khan’s petition challenging an earlier ruling by the Lahore High Court.

That court had previously turned down his bail plea in eight cases linked to the 2023 unrest.

The court instructed that the 72-year-old politician be released from custody, provided he is not implicated in any other ongoing investigation.

Despite this decision, Khan will remain incarcerated due to a conviction in a separate corruption trial.

The former cricket star-turned-political leader is currently entangled in a wide array of legal challenges, ranging from financial misconduct to charges of terrorism — accusations he dismisses as a "sham."

Numerous figures from Khan’s political organization, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf, including key opposition members from both chambers of the national legislature, have recently faced convictions in similar proceedings.

In May 2023, demonstrators stormed various military sites — among them the army’s central headquarters, commonly referred to as the General Headquarters, situated in the military town of Rawalpindi — following Khan’s brief detention in a graft case.
