Meta Dismantles Over 6.8 Million WhatsApp Scam Accounts
“As part of our ongoing proactive work to protect people from scams, WhatsApp detected and banned over 6.8 million accounts linked to scam centers,” the company stated.
According to Meta, many of these accounts were dismantled before they could be activated, thanks to improved enforcement tools and investigative data.
Scam networks often operate multiple fraudulent schemes simultaneously—ranging from crypto scams to pyramid schemes, Meta noted. One common warning sign includes demands for upfront payments in return for promised profits.
To further combat malicious activity, WhatsApp introduced a new group chat safety overview. This feature activates when a user is added to a group by someone not in their contact list.
The safety prompt offers users information about the group, provides safety advice, and gives them the option to exit before viewing any messages. Notifications for these groups stay muted unless the user chooses to stay, the company said.
Additionally, WhatsApp is piloting a new warning system for messages from unknown contacts. These alerts appear before a conversation begins, giving users context and encouraging vigilance.
Meta added that scammers often use deceptive tactics such as offers of quick money, fake investment opportunities, or fabricated threats like unpaid bills to exploit victims.
The company urged the public to remain skeptical of unexpected messages from unknown individuals—particularly those seeking money or sensitive information.
