European Council Chief Welcomes US-Led Syrian Ceasefire
In a message shared on X, Costa emphasized the need for all involved sides to fulfill their agreed-upon "commitments."
"I welcome the current truce brokered by the US and regional partners, and urge all parties to deliver on their commitments," Costa posted, reiterating his support for diplomatic resolution.
He also appealed to Syrian leadership to ensure the "protection" of every individual belonging to "religious and ethnic minorities," stressing that there should be no "distinction" in the safeguarding of civilian lives.
US Secretary of State Marco Rubio declared on Wednesday that the conflicting sides had come to a consensus on "specific steps" intended to put an end to the ongoing hostilities in the war-ravaged nation.
Despite the ceasefire efforts, tensions flared again when, on Wednesday, the Israeli military conducted aerial bombardments targeting the Syrian capital, Damascus, along with the cities of Suwayda and Daraa.
The justification offered for these raids was the defense of the Druze population.
Further reports indicated that an additional strike occurred early Thursday, striking a Syrian army installation.
According to Syria's Interior Ministry, the recent offensives resulted in the deaths of over 30 people and left nearly 100 others "injured."
