Trump Softens China Approach in Bid for Trade Deal
A top-level meeting between Trump and Xi now seems probable following a recent encounter in Malaysia between US Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Rubio characterized the discussions as “positive” and noted that both nations were strongly committed to organizing a summit between their leaders. The Chinese administration mirrored that view, describing the exchange as “pragmatic and constructive.”
According to the individuals cited by the agency, Trump is now more focused on closing purchase agreements with China and gaining swift, symbolic victories rather than addressing the underlying reasons behind the persistent trade disparities.
This marks a significant shift from his earlier approach, which emphasized reducing the American trade imbalance by implementing aggressive tariffs.
In April, Trump enacted sweeping levies on goods from over 90 countries, including China. Beijing responded with its own set of tariffs, leading to a heated trade dispute, with US duties soaring to 145% and China’s reaching 125%.
Negotiations held in Geneva in May resulted in a temporary freeze on the introduction of most new tariffs.
