Kremlin states Putin, Macron speak for first time in three years
During the call, Putin blamed the ongoing Ukraine conflict on Western nations, claiming they had ignored Russia’s security concerns for years and turned Ukraine into an “anti-Russian stronghold.” He reaffirmed Moscow’s stance that any peace deal must address the root causes of the crisis, recognize current territorial realities, and provide a comprehensive and lasting resolution.
The leaders also discussed tensions in the Middle East, particularly the recent flare-up between Israel and Iran. Both agreed that diplomatic efforts were essential and committed to maintaining communication for potential coordination of positions.
They acknowledged their shared responsibility to uphold peace, security, and the global nuclear non-proliferation framework. Putin and Macron emphasized the importance of Iran’s right to peaceful nuclear energy while stressing Tehran’s need to comply with its international obligations and cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA).
France has been one of Ukraine’s most vocal supporters since the conflict with Russia escalated in February 2022, providing over €3.7 billion ($4.1 billion) in military aid, according to the Kiel Institute. Macron had previously suggested the possibility of sending French troops to Ukraine, although no such deployment occurred. Moscow has consistently warned that the presence of Western forces in Ukraine could spark a broader conflict with NATO.
In recent months, Macron has moderated his tone, admitting in May that France has done all it can to support Ukraine militarily. He recently stated that Europe does not wish to maintain an indefinite arms race and called for renewed dialogue with Russia to pursue broader European security and a possible peace settlement for Ukraine.
