Lamola Calls for Fairness, Sustainability at G20
(MENAFN) At the G20 Sherpa Meeting in Sun City, North West Province, South Africa's Minister of International Relations and Cooperation, Ronald Lamola, stressed the need for a more just and balanced global system, particularly in relation to Africa.
He called for an end to the harmful practices of exploitative resource extraction, stating that the G20 should be at the forefront of driving transformational diplomacy, promoting global peace, and advancing sustainable development.
During his speech, Lamola emphasized the mounting pressures on the global economy due to rising geopolitical tensions, economic nationalism, and climate-related disasters.
He urged the G20 to take bold steps in reforming multilateral institutions to ensure developing nations have an equal voice in global decision-making processes.
“This is not just economics; it is Solidarity, Equality and Sustainability – the theme of our Presidency,” Lamola declared.
He further highlighted the importance of the G20 as a platform to end the era of unequal extraction and shift towards genuine partnerships for the advancement of sustainable development across the globe.
The Minister also reflected on South Africa's international vision, which is deeply rooted in its historical liberation struggle.
He referenced the 1955 Freedom Charter, which advocates for peace and unity, stating: “There shall be peace and friendship!”
Lamola emphasized that the Freedom Charter continues to serve as the cornerstone of the nation’s Constitution and international approach, maintaining its principles even after more than 70 years.
Lamola went on to highlight a stark contradiction in Africa’s vast mineral wealth, which plays a crucial role in the global energy transition, yet offers minimal economic benefit to local communities.
He cited critical minerals like platinum, vanadium, and fluorspar from the North West Province, pointing out that these are often exported in their raw form, with value-added products being imported at much higher costs.
