Greece Suspends Asylum Applications for North African Migrants
(MENAFN) Greece has announced the suspension of asylum applications from individuals arriving from North Africa for a period of three months, as revealed by Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis.
The move is intended to address the growing number of illegal migrants arriving by boat.
Mitsotakis emphasized that those arriving unlawfully would be detained and arrested.
This temporary suspension aims to provide the Greek government with an opportunity to manage the sharp increase in migrant arrivals, according to the Prime Minister’s statement on X (formerly known as Twitter) on Wednesday.
He conveyed the government’s firm stance, stating, “The Greek Government sends a message of determination that the passage from North Africa to Greece is closing… [and] to all traffickers and all their potential customers that the money they spend may be completely wasted, because it will be difficult to reach Greece by sea.”
This announcement follows a day after the eastern-based Libyan government in Benghazi blocked the entry of a European Union delegation, which included Greek Minister for Migration and Asylum Thanos Plevris.
The delegation had visited Libya to discuss measures aimed at reducing illegal migration.
