Greek PM announces new cabinet appointments

(MENAFN) Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis announced four new ministerial appointments on Saturday following a series of resignations connected to a corruption probe involving European Union agricultural subsidies.

Thanos Plevris, the former health minister, was appointed Minister of Migration and Asylum. Harry Theoharis took the role of Deputy Foreign Minister, while Yiannis Andrianos and Christos Dermentzopoulos were assigned as Deputy Ministers for Rural Development and Food, and Digital Governance, respectively. These new officials are scheduled to be sworn in on Monday, according to government spokesperson Pavlos Marinakis.

The resignations came amid an expanding investigation into the mishandling of EU funds by OPEKEPE, the Greek agency responsible for distributing payments under the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy (CAP).

On Friday, five senior officials resigned after being implicated in a case file submitted by the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO) to Greek courts. The case alleges fraudulent subsidy allocations between 2019 and 2021, involving ineligible farmers and falsified documents. All five officials held prominent roles at the Ministry of Rural Development and Food during the alleged period of misconduct.

The scandal deepened on Saturday when two members of the ruling New Democracy party also resigned after their names appeared in the EPPO file. Andreas Karasarinis, head of the party’s agricultural organizations, and Yiannis Troullinos, a political committee member, stepped down, with party leadership quickly accepting their departures.
