Russia Dismisses Azerbaijan’s Objections Over Detained Ethnic Azerbaijanis

(MENAFN) On Saturday, the Russian Foreign Ministry dismissed Azerbaijan’s objections regarding the detention of several ethnic Azerbaijanis in Yekaterinburg, clarifying that those arrested are Russian citizens suspected of serious offenses committed in previous years.

Spokeswoman Maria Zakharova responded to Baku’s condemnation of the June 27 raids, stating, “The Investigative Directorate of the Investigative Committee of the Russian Federation for Sverdlovsk Region has already commented on the case.”

Zakharova stressed that although the suspects are of Azerbaijani heritage, they hold Russian citizenship and were detained as part of ongoing investigations into major criminal activities.

She added that Russian chargé d’affaires in Baku, Pavel Volokov, was summoned to Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry on June 28, where he “provided the necessary explanations” and assured officials that the situation remains under control.

“Investigative actions on the mentioned criminal cases are ongoing. More detailed information will be made public by the Investigative Committee as it becomes available,” Zakharova said.

Earlier, Azerbaijan’s Foreign Ministry expressed deep concern over the operations, claiming some Azerbaijani nationals were killed or seriously wounded, and nine others detained.

Baku demanded an urgent investigation and accountability for what it called “unacceptable violence.”

These events heighten tensions amid already sensitive Moscow-Baku relations surrounding ethnic and diaspora matters, despite prior commitments by both sides to cooperate on security issues.
