Trump applauds ‘great’ NATO summit
However, not all NATO members agreed with the spending target. Spain secured an exemption from the 5% goal just before the summit, with Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez labeling Trump’s demand “unreasonable and counterproductive.” Slovakia’s Prime Minister Robert Fico also rejected the need for a major defense budget boost, emphasizing his country’s different priorities.
The summit was notably brief, lasting only two and a half hours, reportedly because Trump dislikes lengthy meetings. The agenda focused almost exclusively on defense spending, sidelining other issues like Ukraine’s conflict and its aspirations for NATO membership, which received minimal attention and were absent from the final declaration.
Some European officials expressed discomfort with the excessive praise NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte lavished on Trump. According to Politico, Rutte called Trump “daddy” and sent a flattering message applauding the US strikes on Iran’s nuclear sites prior to the summit—messages Trump eagerly shared on social media. The White House further promoted the event with a video featuring Trump accompanied by Usher’s song “Daddy’s Home.”
