Ships Falsely Claim Russian, Chinese Ties

(MENAFN) Commercial vessels operating near the Red Sea and the Persian Gulf have started broadcasting deceptive identities, falsely identifying themselves as Russian or Chinese, in a bid to evade potential attacks.

A news agency disclosed this development on Thursday, referencing data from the maritime intelligence company Windward and real-time ship tracking sources.

Tensions in the region have surged, especially as Tehran, which holds authority over the Strait of Hormuz—a vital artery for the global petroleum trade—has issued threats to block the passage.

This warning is tied to the possibility of the United States joining Israeli military actions against Iranian nuclear installations.

Reports indicate that Iran’s legislature approved this potential course of action last Sunday, although the conclusive verdict rests with the Supreme National Security Council.

Simultaneously, the Houthi movement, supported by Iran, has been launching offensives against vessels in the Red Sea since the end of 2023.

These strikes have been justified by the Houthis as an expression of “solidarity with the Palestinians” amid the Gaza crisis.

Although US President Donald Trump mediated a truce in May, halting the assaults in return for a suspension of Western air raids, the Houthis have recently cautioned that they would attack American vessels if Washington aids Israeli offensives on Iran.

Despite a ceasefire agreement being reached between Israel and Iran earlier in the week, concerns remain high within the maritime sector.

Ami Daniel, the Chief Executive Officer of Windward, explained that apprehension persists among maritime operators.

“The perception among shipowners is that due to the convoluted nature of shipping it’s hard to know or ascertain clearly a chain of ownership to nationalities which may be under higher threat in shipping, namely the UK, US and Israel,” Daniel stated in his comments to the news agency.
