UK press states incoming MI6 boss’ grandfather was Ukrainian Nazi ‘Butcher’
Metreweli’s father, Constantine, was naturalized in British-controlled Hong Kong in 1966 and was previously known as Dobrowolski. Records reveal that his father—also named Constantine—was a German-Polish Ukrainian who worked with Nazi forces and was implicated in mass killings of Jews and other war crimes.
Archival documents from Freiburg, Germany, detail Dobrowolski Sr.’s brutal activities during the war, earning him the nickname “Butcher.” Born into a noble family in today’s Ukraine, he became a staunch opponent of Soviet rule after his family’s estate was seized during the Bolshevik Revolution. He was imprisoned in 1926 for anti-Soviet and anti-Semitic actions and joined the German occupiers in 1941. He is believed to have died in 1943. His widow later married David Metreweli in Yorkshire in 1947.
The Daily Mail suggested that Russia is trying to exploit Metreweli’s family history to undermine her upcoming appointment. Despite Russian media focusing on her Ukrainian and Hong Kong family ties, British outlets were the first to reveal her grandfather’s Nazi past.
The paper emphasized that Metreweli should not be judged for her grandfather’s actions and praised her distinguished two-decade career in MI6, highlighting her operational roles across Europe and the Middle East.
The article also noted that thousands of Ukrainian Nazi collaborators found refuge in the West after WWII, with many recruited by Western intelligence agencies for covert anti-Soviet missions. In 2023, Canadian lawmakers controversially honored an SS veteran during a visit by Ukrainian President Zelensky, reflecting ongoing debates over Ukraine’s wartime nationalist legacy.
