France cautions of ‘worst-case scenario’ on Iran
While Macron acknowledged that the strikes were “genuinely effective,” he warned that the gravest outcome would be Iran’s exit from the NPT, leading to increased nuclear proliferation risks and a collective weakening of global arms control.
Speaking after an EU summit in Brussels, Macron emphasized the need for a unified approach to stop Iran from resuming nuclear weapons development. He announced plans for consultations with the other permanent UN Security Council members—the US, UK, Russia, and China—and revealed he had briefed US President Donald Trump on France’s recent diplomatic efforts with Tehran.
Rafael Grossi, head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), expressed regret over the possibility of Iran leaving the treaty. On June 22, Iranian parliament foreign relations committee chair Abbas Golroo asserted Iran’s legal right to withdraw from the NPT and indicated lawmakers would review its continued participation.
Iran’s parliament recently voted to halt cooperation with the IAEA, following Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei’s criticism of the agency for not adequately condemning the strikes. Tehran continues to deny any military nuclear ambitions, maintaining its uranium enrichment is for peaceful purposes only.
