Zelensky urges EU to remain unified in applying sanctions against Russia
In a message posted Friday on X, Zelenskyy welcomed the results of Thursday’s European Council summit, which reaffirmed support for Ukraine. He described the outcomes as containing “truly good decisions on security support, further pressure on Russia, and a high evaluation of our internal transformation.”
Despite the challenges of ongoing war, Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine is steadily advancing on its path toward EU membership. He thanked EU leaders, specifically European Council President Charles Michel and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, for their consistent leadership.
“Every united signal of support for Ukraine is a signal of guarantee that Europe has a normal future,” he stated.
The European Commission recently introduced its 18th sanctions package against Moscow, unveiled on June 10, aiming at curbing Russia’s income from energy exports, restricting banking operations, and further targeting its military-industrial base.
However, the proposed sanctions have faced resistance from within the bloc, particularly from Slovakia and Hungary, both of which oppose plans to phase out Russian energy imports by the end of 2027.
