Moscow states Israel-Iran ceasefire is not framwork for ending Russia-Ukriane war

(MENAFN)
Moscow has dismissed suggestions that the recent ceasefire between Israel and Iran could serve as a framework for ending the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. The Kremlin asserted that the nature and background of the two conflicts are fundamentally different, emphasizing that such comparisons are misleading.

As reported by various sources, US Special Envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff recently claimed that the Iran-Israel truce might inspire a similar peace effort between Moscow and Kiev. “We’re hopeful that people look at what happened in Iran and say: ‘we want a part of that sort of peace process as well,’” Witkoff said.

Responding to the remarks, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov flatly rejected any parallels. He stated that “the Israeli attacks on Iran were absolutely unprovoked,” contrasting them with Russia’s actions in Ukraine, which he said were the result of “decades of NATO expansion” and Western backing for the 2014 change of government in Kiev.

Peskov added, “It is hardly appropriate to draw parallels here,” and argued that attempts to force peace in Ukraine would not work. He also dismissed the concept of "peace by force" as irrelevant in this context.

On June 13, Israel launched strikes on Iranian territory, claiming Iran was nearing the capacity to produce nuclear weapons. This accusation has been contested by both the International Atomic Energy Agency and US intelligence. The US also joined in by targeting Iranian nuclear infrastructure, prompting Iran to retaliate with a missile strike on a US military base in Qatar. A ceasefire reportedly brokered by US President Donald Trump was reached days later.

Meanwhile, the war in Ukraine intensified in 2022, with Moscow accusing Kiev of violating the Minsk agreements by escalating attacks on civilians in Donbass. Russia also cited Ukraine’s NATO ambitions and Western military aid as drivers of the conflict.

Direct talks between Russia and Ukraine resumed in May after a prolonged hiatus. The two sides have since agreed on humanitarian measures, including exchanges of prisoners and fallen soldiers. Although draft peace proposals have been shared, the Kremlin noted that negotiations on these documents would only proceed once the initial agreements are honored.
