UN Chief supports US peace agreement between DRC, Rwanda
(MENAFN) UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres expressed strong support for a newly signed peace agreement between the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) and Rwanda, hailing it as a critical milestone for easing tensions and fostering stability in Eastern DRC and the broader Great Lakes region.
The accord, finalized in Washington, DC, with US mediation and additional support from Qatar and African Union facilitator Togolese President Faure Gnassingbe, marked a major diplomatic breakthrough. Guterres praised the collaborative efforts, noting the vital roles played by the five co-facilitators appointed by the East African Community and the Southern African Development Community.
"This Agreement is a significant step towards de-escalation, peace and stability in the Eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo and the Great Lakes region," Guterres stated.
He called on both parties to uphold the obligations laid out in the peace agreement, including a full ceasefire and the implementation of all related provisions outlined in the UN Security Council resolution 2773 (2025).
Guterres reaffirmed the UN's commitment to supporting the peace process through its mission in the DRC (MONUSCO), alongside efforts by the African Union and other international partners.
The peace deal was signed by the foreign ministers of DRC and Rwanda during a ceremony attended by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The conflict, which has lasted for decades, has led to the displacement of over 7.8 million people, according to the UN.
