Mexican President Vows to Safeguard Mexican Migrants in U.S.
(MENAFN) Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum pledged Friday that her government would take all necessary measures to safeguard Mexican migrants in the United States, following a series of immigration raids that led to the arrest of 252 Mexican nationals.
"Our solidarity, our support, and everything within our reach -- we will do everything to protect our migrant brothers and sisters," Sheinbaum declared during her daily press briefing.
Sheinbaum highlighted that Mexican consulates in the US have been directed to visit Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP) detention centers daily, a key part of the government's strategy to bolster the protection of Mexican nationals in the US.
Additionally, she revealed that consuls are required to hold weekly public hearings to gather information, listen to concerns, and take swift action where necessary.
The president reiterated that her administration would deploy all available resources to defend migrants against threats and human rights violations, and she committed to addressing any complaints raised by Mexicans abroad without exception.
Sheinbaum also took aim at Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, condemning his controversial proposal to build a new detention facility in the state’s southern wetlands, which has been dubbed "Alligator Alcatraz."
"Immigrants are not criminals," she said, firmly rejecting DeSantis' initiative as part of a broader attack on migrant rights.
