Wen Roujia becomes first Chinese winner of Young Inventors' Prize

(MENAFN) Wen Roujia has earned the distinction of being the first Chinese recipient of the Young Inventors' Prize, presented by the European Patent Office (EPO) during a ceremony held Wednesday in Reykjavik.

She and her collaborator, Alisha Fredriksson, were awarded for creating a carbon capture solution that can be added to existing ships, allowing shipowners to cut down on emissions without having to replace their current fleets.

According to reports, their invention was selected as one of the top 10 entries in the 2025 Young Inventors' Prize contest, which drew over 450 applicants from across five continents.
"Ships produce about three percent of global CO2 emissions. There are a lot of opportunities for us to stop ships from pumping CO2," said Wen before the ceremony.

She also highlighted the challenges involved in adapting the system for marine environments. "Maritime environment is much harsher than on land. We have to consider a lot of factors, like the weather and salt corrosion. So, our materials need to be anti-corrosion, and we need to develop equipment that can be seat-fastened so that it doesn't move around as the ship rolls in the waves," she said.

Wen and Fredriksson launched a startup focused on capturing CO2 by transforming it into solid form using calcium-based compounds. The resulting material—limestone pellets—can be either reused or employed in industries such as construction. Their technology presents a durable and adaptable approach to lowering emissions in the shipping sector.
