Hungary Repatriates Nationals from Iran, Suspends Embassy in Tehran

(MENAFN) The Hungarian government has removed six of its nationals from Iran and temporarily halted its embassy’s operations in Tehran due to escalating security risks, Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister Peter Szijjarto revealed Thursday.

Szijjarto explained that this move came after thorough preparation, triggered by the worsening security climate caused by increased Israeli missile and bombing raids. With Iranian airspace closed and transport routes compromised, the evacuation proceeded overland toward Azerbaijan.

Alongside the civilians, all Hungarian diplomatic staff and their families—totaling 15 people including children—were also relocated to Azerbaijan.

The embassy in Tehran will stay closed until conditions improve enough to guarantee safe operations. Meanwhile, embassy duties will be conducted remotely from Azerbaijan.

"This decision was necessary to ensure the safety of our staff and their families," Szijjarto stated.

The tensions intensified after Israel’s June 13 airstrikes targeted Tehran and other Iranian cities, killing several high-ranking military officials and nuclear scientists. Iran responded by launching missile attacks across multiple locations in Israel, resulting in casualties and widespread destruction.

Official data reports nearly 600 fatalities in Iran and 24 deaths in Israel as the conflict continues.
