Fire result in death of four prisoners in Uruguay's largest prison
The incident occurred in a cell block at Santiago Vázquez Prison, also known as Comcar. Authorities from the National Rehabilitation Institute (INR), which operates under the ministry, confirmed that the blaze erupted early in the afternoon and tragically resulted in the deaths of four incarcerated individuals.
Firefighters arrived swiftly and were able to contain the fire before it reached other parts of the complex. According to officials, three prison staff members were exposed to carbon monoxide and experienced related symptoms, but no additional injuries were reported.
Investigators are now working at the scene to uncover what triggered the fire.
This incident comes just months after a deadly blaze at the same facility in September 2024, when a fire believed to have been deliberately set during gang-related violence claimed the lives of six inmates, as determined by a judicial inquiry.
