Iran Hints at Possible NPT Withdrawal
Foreign Ministry representative Esmaeil Baqaei, addressing a question about leaving the NPT, remarked that “on important issues such as how to deal with the NPT, a decision must be made by the relevant authorities.”
Baqaei underscored that Iran views all types of weapons of mass destruction, especially nuclear arms, as incompatible with its “religious teachings and beliefs.”
This perspective aligns with longstanding Iranian policy that condemns such weaponry on moral and theological grounds.
Contrary to circulating speculation, the Iranian legislature recently rejected claims suggesting a move toward exiting the NPT.
According to domestic news outlets, the parliament affirmed it has no intention of introducing or passing any formal declarations on this matter.
Tensions in the region sharply increased after the UN nuclear watchdog last week accused Iran of violating its nuclear commitments—the first such accusation in two decades.
This development comes amid intensifying hostilities, particularly following Israel’s coordinated aerial attacks on numerous Iranian locations, including both military and nuclear installations.
In reaction, Iran launched a series of counterattacks.
According to Israeli officials, no fewer than 24 individuals were killed, and hundreds sustained injuries due to Iranian missile strikes since Friday.
Meanwhile, Iranian sources reported a significantly higher toll, stating that at least 224 people had lost their lives and over 1,000 were hurt in the Israeli bombardment.
