UN Rights Chief Condemns Attacks on Gaza Aid
He cautioned that the militarized nature of Israel’s humanitarian aid framework might be placing civilians at heightened danger and potentially breaching international law.
Volker Turk reported in a statement that, “For a third day running, people were killed around an aid distribution site run by the ‘Gaza Humanitarian Foundation.’ This morning, we have received information that dozens more people were killed and injured.”
He described the lethal attacks targeting vulnerable civilians attempting to obtain the scarce food assistance in Gaza as “unconscionable,” emphasizing the gravity of the situation.
Turk urged for “a prompt and impartial investigation into each of these attacks, and those responsible held to account,” highlighting that “attacks directed against civilians constitute a grave breach of international law, and a war crime.”
He expressed concern that Palestinians face a dreadful dilemma: “Die from starvation or risk being killed while trying to access the meagre food that is being made available through Israel’s militarized humanitarian assistance mechanism.”
The human rights chief pointed out that this militarized system “endangers lives and violates international standards” for distributing aid, a warning the UN has issued repeatedly.
Finally, Turk emphasized that the “willful impediment of access to food and other life-sustaining relief supplies for civilians may constitute a war crime,” underscoring the seriousness of these actions.
