UK Threatens Legal Action to Secure Chelsea FC
In a joint declaration, Foreign Secretary David Lammy and Chancellor Rachel Reeves emphasized their intention to ensure that those affected by the conflict in Ukraine receive support from the Chelsea FC sale "as soon as possible."
"While the door for negotiations will remain open, we are fully prepared to pursue this through the courts if required," they stated, as reported by a news agency.
Chelsea was taken away from Abramovich in March 2022 following the imposition of sanctions by the UK government.
The EURO2.5 billion (approximately USD3.4 billion) generated from the sale has been held in a frozen bank account in the UK since then.
The Russian businessman was sanctioned shortly after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began in February 2022.
Lammy and Reeves further commented: "The government is determined to see the proceeds from the sale of Chelsea Football Club reach humanitarian causes in Ukraine, following Russia's illegal full-scale invasion."
"We are deeply frustrated that it has not been possible to reach agreement on this with Mr Abramovich so far," their statement added.
Upon announcing his intention to sell the club, Abramovich declared that the proceeds would be donated "for the benefit of all victims of the (Ukraine) war."
Nevertheless, the UK government has insisted that the money be exclusively allocated to humanitarian aid within Ukraine.
