UK Experiences Hottest, Driest Spring on Record
(MENAFN) Provisional data released Monday confirms the UK has experienced its hottest spring on record, alongside the driest conditions in more than half a century.
According to the Met Office, the UK’s official meteorological service, the average temperature this spring reached 9.5°C (49.1°F), exceeding the long-term average by 1.4°C. This marks the warmest spring since systematic records began in 1884.
The agency noted that eight of the ten warmest springs in UK history have occurred in the last 25 years, with the three hottest springs all taking place since 2017.
In addition to soaring temperatures, this spring was the driest the UK has seen in over fifty years, ranking as the sixth driest since records started in 1836. Total rainfall measured just 128.2 millimeters (5 inches), which is 40% below the historical average, the Met Office reported.
The country’s coastal waters also underwent a heatwave, with sea surface temperatures hitting unprecedented levels during April and May, the agency said. Some areas saw water temperatures rise by as much as 4°C above typical levels, producing exceptional conditions along the coastline.
Emily Carlisle, a scientist at the Met Office, emphasized that the UK's climate is steadily evolving. She pointed out that what sets spring 2025 apart is the unusual blend of record-breaking warmth and sunshine combined with very little rainfall.
"This spring shows some of the changes we're seeing in our weather patterns, with more extreme conditions, including prolonged dry, sunny weather, becoming more frequent," Carlisle explained.
She added, "The data clearly shows that recent decades have been warmer, sunnier and often drier than the 20th century average, although natural variation will continue to play a role in the UK’s weather."
