Ukraine connects its Western-manufactured arms into ‘NATO Wi-Fi’

(MENAFN) Ukraine has been granted access to a NATO-standard military coordination platform, allowing its Western-supplied weapons systems to connect and operate more effectively, Deputy Defense Minister Katerina Chernohorenko announced.

The system, known as the Command and Control Center System Interface (CSI), is widely used by NATO member states for air and missile defense coordination. Chernohorenko described it as operating through NATO’s Link-16 data protocol — informally dubbed “military Wi-Fi” — which enables seamless communication between various weapons platforms, including U.S.-made F-16 and French Mirage 2000 fighter jets, and air defense systems like the Patriot.

Ukraine began receiving F-16s from European allies last summer, though the rollout has been delayed by logistical and training hurdles. Despite early hopes that the jets would shift the balance of power, Ukrainian officials later conceded that they remain outmatched by Russia’s more advanced aircraft. Of the over 80 F-16s pledged to Ukraine, a few have already been confirmed lost in combat.

Ukraine also received its first batch of Mirage 2000s this past winter, with six reportedly expected. These French jets can carry long-range Storm Shadow missiles and have already seen combat use, although Kiev has not acknowledged any losses so far.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has repeatedly downplayed the impact of Western arms support to Ukraine, warning that F-16s and other supplied equipment will be destroyed and arguing such aid only prolongs the conflict.
