Peru Mudslide Claims Six Lives as Truck Swept into Ravine

(MENAFN) At least six people lost their lives when a truck was engulfed by a powerful mudslide triggered by heavy rainfall in Peru’s southern Ayacucho region on Sunday, the National Emergency Operations Center (COEN) confirmed on Monday.

According to COEN’s update shared via the platform X, search and recovery efforts involved coordination between the National Police, the Peruvian Army, volunteer firefighters, and officials from the District Municipality. Rescuers were ultimately able to locate the bodies of all six victims who had gone missing during the disaster in Anco district.

A state news agency reported that the large-scale landslide struck around 5:30 a.m. local time as the truck was traveling along the route linking the Anco and Llochegua districts. The vehicle was swept away by a torrent of mud and debris, eventually tumbling into a ravine more than 100 meters deep, making recovery efforts especially challenging.

Another truck on the same road was partially buried by the slide but avoided tragedy, as all occupants managed to flee without injury.

Medical teams from the Regional Health Directorate (Diresa) were deployed to the site, assisting rescue crews and providing care to those impacted by the incident.
