Ukraine Aligns with Western Allies Ahead of Istanbul Talks
This meeting aimed to synchronize their positions ahead of direct discussions with Russia, a Ukrainian official announced on Monday.
Foreign Ministry spokesman Heorhii Tykhyi explained that the purpose of the gathering was to harmonize perspectives regarding the key points on the agenda for the upcoming Ukraine-Russia negotiations.
During the talks, the Ukrainian delegation reaffirmed their dedication to achieving peace, emphasizing the necessity of a comprehensive ceasefire, the possibility of a summit involving “leaders’ meeting” at the highest level, and humanitarian confidence-building initiatives.
Tykhyi noted on social media that “the sides coordinated positions ahead of today’s meeting between the Ukrainian and Russian delegations.”
The Ukrainian team’s appeal for a “leaders’ meeting” and an immediate ceasefire coincides with ongoing diplomatic initiatives, with Türkiye serving as the host and mediator for the latest round of talks.
Arriving in Istanbul on Monday, Ukraine’s delegation prepared for the second session of direct negotiations with Russia.
According to Turkish Foreign Ministry sources, the discussions are set to commence at 1 pm local time (1000 GMT) at Istanbul’s historic Ciragan Palace.
