Finnish Premier Presses U.S. to Impose Stricter Sanctions on Russia
(MENAFN) Finnish Prime Minister Petteri Orpo is pressing the United States to impose stricter sanctions on Russia, as the European Union readies a fresh sanctions package ahead of its upcoming summit.
"Europe is preparing a new sanctions package for the next summit. The United States — meaning (President Donald) Trump, in practice — already has a very tough sanctions package in place. I hope the US will now come to the conclusion that Russia is playing for time, and now is the time to implement those sanctions," Orpo stated during an interview with a news agency.
He emphasized that increasing economic pressure on Moscow is essential for halting hostilities and pushing toward a diplomatic resolution.
"At the moment, I don't believe there's anything else to be done than for the West, the United States and Europe together with like-minded nations, to increase pressure on Russia — to support Ukraine's army in repelling Russia's continued attacks," he added.
Following a visit to Kyiv on Wednesday, Orpo described the conditions in Ukraine as "shocking," particularly the widespread civilian suffering. He reaffirmed Finland’s commitment to helping Ukraine maintain daily life during the ongoing war.
When questioned about boosting Finland’s military expenditure, Orpo did not rule out further increases.
"If our defence capability is not sufficient in this situation, then we are jeopardising the safety of our entire nation," he warned.
