Kremlin states Russian attacks on Ukraine are revengeful
(MENAFN) Russia's recent military strikes on Ukraine are retaliatory actions targeting military-related sites, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Monday. The response comes after Ukraine ramped up drone attacks on Russian civilian infrastructure.
Peskov explained that Russia is targeting Ukrainian military facilities in response to strikes on Russian civilian structures. “These are retaliatory strikes, aimed specifically at military targets,” he emphasized during a press briefing.
The Russian Defense Ministry reported that Ukraine launched hundreds of drones between Tuesday and Friday, with more than 150 intercepted in a single 24-hour period. In response, Russia confirmed strikes on a missile and drone production facility in Kiev, along with several other military locations.
The sharp increase in Ukrainian attacks followed a phone call between Presidents Vladimir Putin and Donald Trump, which focused on efforts to resolve the conflict. However, Trump later criticized Putin, claiming he had “gone absolutely crazy” and launched strikes “for no reason.”
Peskov responded by saying that heightened tensions during peace talks often lead to emotional reactions. He reiterated that Putin's decisions are guided by national security needs, and also pointed out that Ukrainian officials had issued threats ahead of foreign leaders visiting Moscow for Victory Day events.
Earlier in the month, Russia and Ukraine resumed direct peace negotiations in Istanbul for the first time since 2022. Both parties agreed to explore further talks and successfully carried out a landmark prisoner exchange. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov stated that Moscow is now drafting a proposal for Kiev, which could potentially lead to a lasting resolution of the conflict.
