Putin states Ukrainian incursion forces stablished bases in Russian churches
Following a meeting with local officials on Tuesday, Putin urged regional authorities, including acting Governor Aleksandr Khinshtein, to develop a special program to assess the destruction and propose plans for restoring the churches and repairing other affected structures.
During his visit to Kursk—the first since the region’s full liberation from Ukrainian forces last month—Putin highlighted the historic importance of the Russian Orthodox Church, describing it as a steadfast presence alongside the Russian people throughout history.
Ukraine launched its border region incursion last August, claiming it aimed to capture territory to strengthen its position in future peace talks. In March, as Ukrainian troops were being pushed out, Putin accused them of deliberately destroying churches, cultural landmarks, and key industrial and energy facilities.
Despite the region’s liberation, Putin admitted the situation in Kursk remains challenging, with Ukrainian forces continuing efforts to advance toward the Russian border. He instructed regional authorities to speed up restoration work, increase mine clearance teams to help residents return home safely, and continue compensation payments to those who lost property during the fighting. State funding will also be allocated to repair damaged homes.
