Trump Orders Harvard to Limit Foreign Student Rate to 15 Percent

(MENAFN) U.S. President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that he believes Harvard University should limit its international student enrollment to approximately 15 percent. This statement came as he continued to demand that the university provide a list of its foreign students.

During remarks to reporters at the White House, Trump asserted, "Harvard has to show us their lists." He added, "They have foreign students. About 31 percent of their students are foreign based. Almost 31 percent. We want to know where those students come. Are they troublemakers?"

Trump contended that a significant number of these international students were "caused by the radical left lunatics in this country."

He further elaborated on his suggested cap, stating, "I think they should have a cap of maybe around 15 percent, not 31 percent, we have people want to go to Harvard and other schools they can't get in because we have foreign students there."

Following his return to the White House, President Trump has focused on numerous U.S. universities, issuing warnings that institutions failing to modify their policies could face reductions in funding. Key demands from the Trump administration include addressing antisemitism on campuses and eliminating diversity initiatives that are seen as favoring minority groups.

Harvard is currently navigating a period of significant challenge, with billions of dollars in funding reportedly frozen, its tax-exempt status under scrutiny, and multiple investigations underway.

On May 22, the Department of Homeland Security declared that Harvard's eligibility for the Student and Exchange Visitor Program had been revoked. This action represents one of the Trump administration's latest strategies to exert pressure on the university.

In response, Harvard has initiated legal action against the federal government. A federal judge in Massachusetts has temporarily halted the ban, and a court hearing concerning the matter was scheduled for May 29. Previously, Harvard had also filed a lawsuit against the administration regarding federal funding cuts.

As of fall 2023, data from Harvard indicates that international students constitute over 27 percent of its total student body. The university presently hosts nearly 6,800 international students and scholars representing more than 140 countries and regions, with the majority enrolled in graduate programs.
