Zelenskyy Warns of Russian Advancements
During a press briefing on Tuesday, Zelenskyy explained, “They will do everything to cross the administrative border of the Dnipropetrovsk region. They want it. So far they have not succeeded,” emphasizing that the Russian military has not yet achieved this aim.
Zelenskyy highlighted that Russian troops are also targeting Pokrovsk, a critical area located in the Donetsk region in eastern Ukraine.
He pointed out that gaining control over both Donetsk and the nearby Luhansk region has remained a primary goal for Moscow since 2014.
These eastern territories, he suggested, continue to hold strategic significance for the Kremlin.
The president further warned of a developing threat in the northeastern Sumy region, where he said Russian forces are planning to establish a “security buffer zone” stretching 10 kilometers (6.2 miles).
According to Sumy’s regional head, Oleh Hryhorov, Russian forces had already occupied four villages in the area as of late Monday.
Zelenskyy remarked, “Now they are accumulating troops in the Sumy direction. More than 50,000,” and mentioned that Ukraine has implemented defensive steps to prevent a new attack from the north.
Zelenskyy dismissed growing speculation about a potential Russian assault in the southern Kherson region, suggesting there is currently no active concern in that area.
On the economic front, he stressed the need for an additional USD30 billion to fully ramp up Ukraine’s domestic production of military equipment and weaponry, indicating the country’s efforts to become more self-reliant in its defense.
Lastly, Zelenskyy addressed the subject of peace negotiations, identifying Türkiye, the Vatican, and Switzerland as the most viable locations for potential direct talks with Russia.
He ruled out Belarus as a host country for such discussions, saying talks held there were “simply impossible.”
