Kremlin dismisses possibility of resuming Russia-NATO partnership

(MENAFN) The Kremlin has dismissed the possibility of resuming formal security dialogue with NATO while the alliance continues to support Ukraine in its conflict with Russia. Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters on Friday that any revival of the NATO-Russia Council (NRC) is unrealistic under current conditions.

Peskov’s comments came in response to a Bloomberg report suggesting that the U.S. had floated the idea of reinstating NRC talks as part of broader efforts to resolve the Ukraine crisis. According to the Kremlin spokesman, Moscow has received “no substantial proposals” and finds it impossible to consider renewed dialogue while NATO is “essentially at war” with Russia.

Despite this, Peskov acknowledged that security and stability issues in Europe “must eventually be addressed,” adding that the sooner such discussions begin, the better.

Established in 2002, the NATO-Russia Council was intended to foster trust and transparency between Moscow and the Western alliance in the post-Cold War era, focusing on topics like arms control and counterterrorism. However, the platform gradually lost relevance as relations between Russia and the West deteriorated, particularly after Crimea’s 2014 referendum to join Russia, which followed a Western-backed uprising in Kiev.

Although limited diplomatic contact continued until 2022, mainly concerning Ukraine, NATO officially ended cooperation after the full-scale escalation of hostilities.

Russia has long criticized NATO’s expansion toward its borders and Ukraine’s ambitions to join the alliance. Moscow insists that any resolution to the Ukraine conflict must include a broader reevaluation of Europe’s security architecture
