Drone Warfare Escalates Between Russia, Ukraine
(MENAFN) Russia announced on Tuesday that it had successfully neutralized over 2,300 drones launched by Ukraine in the previous week, as both Moscow and Kyiv blamed each other for extensive aerial attacks over three consecutive nights.
The conflict between the two nations has intensified, with each side accusing the other of large-scale strikes.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported on Monday that more than 900 attack drones had been deployed against Ukraine in the last three days, accompanied by ballistic and cruise missile assaults.
According to local officials, these attacks have resulted in over 20 fatalities, including casualties in the capital city, Kyiv.
“There is no military logic in this, but it is a clear political choice – the choice of (Russian President Vladimir) Putin, the choice of Russia – the choice to keep waging war and destroying lives,” Zelenskyy stated in a video message, highlighting the deliberate nature of the ongoing aggression.
Meanwhile, Russian authorities noted a surge in drone incursions originating from Ukraine, some of which were reportedly intercepted while approaching Moscow.
This increased drone activity has become a focal point of Russia’s defense efforts.
Addressing the situation, US Leader Donald Trump remarked on Sunday that his Russian counterpart had gone “absolutely CRAZY,” a comment that the Kremlin dismissed as an outburst driven by “emotional overload.”
According to a declaration from the Russian Defense Ministry, air defense systems intercepted 2,331 Ukrainian drones between 8 pm on May 20 (1700 GMT) and 8 am the following day (0500 GMT).
Of these, 1,465 drones were destroyed outside the boundaries of what Moscow refers to as its “special military operation,” a term used to describe the ongoing conflict.
