US Senator Proposes Tariffs on Russia’s Trade Partners
Additionally, Graham believes this approach would help rehabilitate America’s standing following the chaotic withdrawal from Afghanistan under Joe Biden.
A well-known foreign policy hawk and supporter of Trump, Graham is advocating for legislation that enforces a 500 percent tariff on nations importing Russian energy, uranium, and other essential raw materials. This plan primarily targets countries such as India and China.
In an op-ed published in a Journal on Monday, the senator connected this strategy to the Afghanistan situation, presenting it as “a message” directed at Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Graham criticized the U.S. exit from Afghanistan, writing, “America’s shameful withdrawal from Afghanistan didn’t merely damage our reputation; it set in motion aggression across the world.”
He added that if the U.S. takes a strong leadership role in resolving the Russia-Ukraine conflict, the nation’s image could improve.
“Mr. Trump can restore our reputation – and end the bloodbath,” he asserted.
Republicans have frequently criticized Biden’s management of the 2021 Afghanistan withdrawal, which led to the rapid collapse of U.S.-trained local forces and the Taliban regaining control of Kabul.
Many opponents caution that Trump might repeat a similar mistake as he attempts to broker peace between Moscow and Kiev.
Trump himself has claimed that the Ukraine war would not have started had he been president instead of Biden.
