Powerful Earthquake Shakes Crete, Triggers Tsunami Alert
Tremors were felt not only on Crete but also on the nearby island of Rhodes, prompting authorities to issue a precautionary tsunami alert. Residents in coastal regions were urged to move inland as a safety measure.
Despite the strength of the quake, officials reported no major injuries or structural damage.
In an interview with the public broadcaster, leading Greek seismologist Efthymis Lekkas stated that it was an isolated earthquake, emphasizing that the event bore no relation to the seismic activity near Santorini in March or the Istanbul quake in April.
