EU Reaffirms Commitment to Securing U.S. Trade Deal
On Monday, Maros Sefcovic, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security, shared on social media platform X that "the European Commission remains fully committed to constructive and focused efforts at pace towards an EU-US deal."
His comments came after recent discussions with U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer.
Tensions escalated last Friday when U.S. President Donald Trump declared that negotiations with the 27-nation EU were “going nowhere,” threatening to implement a steep 50 percent tariff on all European imports starting June 1. However, following a phone call between European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Trump on Sunday, the U.S. leader agreed to delay the tariff hike until July 9.
Meanwhile, economists and market experts have voiced concerns over the erratic nature of U.S. trade policies, warning that such unpredictability erodes confidence in America as a stable and dependable trading partner.
